You do remember I am not a team player.

Cathy Jean Nesbitt-Stein is the mother of Vivi-Anne. She is considered to be quite rude. She owns a dance studio (where she is also a dance educator) called Candy Apple's Dance Center in Canton, Ohio. She was once one of the moms in Abby's studio, but quit. She was and continues to be hated by the other moms at Abby's except for Melissa Ziegler, except for some occasions. For the first two or three seasons, she had an especially hostile relationship with Christi, with this eventually being replaced by a hostile relationship with Jill.

In Dance Moms

Season One

Cathy and her daughter were once members of the Abby Lee Dance Company even though she owned her own studio in Ohio, causing the moms to wonder why she drove to Pennsylvania when she could have stayed in her hometown.

None of the moms except Melissa appeared to like her during her duration at Abby's. Cathy didn't seem to listen to them or Abby as seen in When Stars Collide when she began throwing in dance moves to the routine the moms were doing, confusing them and making them feel ridiculous.

Cathy decided in From Ballerinas to Showgirls that she and Vivi would not be with Abby's company any longer and readies her dancers to compete against them in Cathy Brings It On. Because Vivi's leaving left a spot open on Abby's team, Abby had to host an audition for a replacement, which Kendall Vertes, daughter of Jill Vertes, won.

Season Two

In Return of the Candy Apples, Cathy cheats to make sure her dancers win by lying about her dancer Erika's age to get her to compete against Brooke. Her plan is foiled when the dance competition hosts find out and disqualify Erika.

Leslie Ackerman takes her daughter to Candy Apple's in Wardrobe Malfunction after Payton was taken off the team and Leslie had enough of Abby. Cathy is impressed with her dancing, but Payton isn't sure she wanted to dance there, as it was far away from her friends. In Maddie Has A Secret, it is shown that Payton is still with the Abby Lee Dance Company.

When Jill has also had enough of Abby and the moms, she too takes her daughter to Candy Apple's in the episode Topless Showgirls. Cathy welcomes Kendall to the team and has her compete against Nia when she found out she was the top of the pyramid. Kendall wins and Holly is upset, thinking Cathy could have let Nia have a moment to shine. Abby claims the choreography and outfit used belonged to her.

Cathy offers Chloe a chance to be in a commercial for her husband's beef jerky store in Topless Showgirls. Not talking it over with Abby, Christi accepts. Chloe has to wear a meat costume and though she had a dance, it was cut out in the final commercial.

Cathy tells Kendall and Jill that she got Kendall a little gig performing at the halftime show of a Harlem Globetrotters game in Miami Heat Wave.

In Melissa Pleads the Fifth, Cathy has a routine for Justice to go against Maddie and a group dance about clowns. At the competition, Justice loses to Maddie and during the group dance, Taylor injures her ankle. Cathy has Kendall replace Taylor for the time.

Cathy follows Abby to New York to have her students audition for a Joffrey Ballet School scholarship in Abbygeddon. She also has a group dance compete against Abby's at Starbound and they place ninth, beating Abby's, who placed tenth, by a point. In addition, she gives Kendall a solo about the Red Queen, which is what Chloe's solo was, but Chloe beats Kendall, who places seventh, by placing first overall.

In How Do You Like Them Apples?, Cathy hires two professional choreographers to help with the dances because she is busy. None of the dances place, however. Though Abby's dances do not place as high as Abby would have liked, she says they still beat the Candy Apple's. When Abby and the moms try to talk to Cathy about it, she is uncharacteristically quiet and ignores them.

Meanwhile, Jill worries that Cathy has lost interest in Kendall and begins to regret her decision of transferring Kendall to Candy Apples Dance Center. Jill tries to talk to Cathy about Kendall, but Cathy ignores her.

Cathy tells her dancers in Worst Birthday Party Ever! that Jill and Kendall left because Jill thought Cathy wasn't giving Kendall enough attention. She says Jill should have stayed to see what they had to offer. She also tells them that they were going to audition for Drop Dead Diva.

With other members of the cast, Cathy discussed the fight with Christi after nationals, in the special episodes Reunion, Part 1 and The Smoke Before the Fire.

In The Beginning of the End, Cathy and Vivi discuss how their old team of Candy Apple's fell apart at the end of Season 2, and consider using a group of all boy dancers in the upcoming year.

Trivia

  • Cathy adopted Vivi-Anne from Guatemala.[1]
  • Cathy was the first person cast for the show.[2]
  • Her husband Mike Stein is an insurance adjuster and owns a Beef Jerky store, which was seen in an episode of Dance Moms.
  • Abby Lee Miller and Cathy were friends before the show. During a 2012 joint interview with Rosie O'Donnell, both admitted still liking each other and getting-along "in real life".[3] Later in 2012, while in front of an audience of young fans in Canada, Abby said she no longer likes Cathy.[4] In 2013, Afterbuzz interviewers Giselle Ugarte and Tony Moore confronted Abby with conversations they had with Zack Torres that the pair had a better relationship than it seemed on the show, and would hug each other before fights; Abby dismissed these reports as "bull."[5] In Season 4, Blake McGrath was asked about the reality of their relationship, and said they couldn't stand each other.[6]
  • Zack Torres was wary about coming to Candy Apples based on what he had seen on television; but after attending the studio, he was shocked to find Cathy a very sweet person, and described her behavior on the show as "almost like a puppet." Zack further commented on the way the show is edited.[7]
  • Blake said that viewers are made to hate Cathy for the show; but that he had fallen in love with the way she treated people, and couldn't say enough good things about her.[8]
  • During Season 3, Abby said that Cathy is an okay beginner and intermediate dance teacher, but finds it frightening that she "was a member of Dance Masters of America."[9] Various tweets by Cathy suggest her membership in Dance Masters of America was terminated shortly before achieving 25 years as a member.[10][11][12]
  • Cathy owns Payless shoes, and states that "it's a tv show" (in reference to her snobbish taunts against Christi.)[13]
  • Cathy's students and their mothers have stated multiple times on twitter that she is actually very nice and doesn't "follow" Abby's company; they claim they go where the producers of Dance Moms tell them to.
  • Cathy's favorite style of dance to watch is ballet.[14]
  • Her hobbies include golfing, reading, designing vintage decorations, gardening, and shopping.[14]
  • Cathy says her studio now attracts Canton tourists, who also go next door to the Stein family's beef-jerky store.[15]
  • Cathy has complained that everyone had pizza in Abbygeddon, but editing only showed her eating.[15]
  • She's friends with Mitchell Finke[16], who has helped choreograph Candy Apple's dances seen on the show.
  • Cathy says she has always been somewhat of an actress.[15]
  • Her favorite movie is Gone with the Wind.[17]
  • Asked who went to the Joffrey from her studio, Cathy remarked that she now had Joffrey coming to her studio for dance camp, this being one of the perks of being on television.[18]
  • Cathy supported Mitt Romney for President in 2012, retweeting confidence in a landslide victory.[19][20][21].
